Make This Puppy Lucky: Jimmy the Shepherd and Husky Mix

This former beach dog would love nothing more than to move from Puerto Rico to a comfy home in mainland U.S. or Canada.

Looking for an enthusiastic exercise partner and companion? Then look no further than Jimmy! This handsome, fun-in-the-sun-loving “sato” from Vieques, Puerto Rico, is looking for a forever home in the mainland U.S. or Canada that’s just as active and loving as he is.

Name: Jimmy.

Age and sex: 3- to 4-year-old male.

Breed: Shepherd and Husky mix.

Size and weight: Large and 65 pounds.

Coat: Short, tan, brown, and black.

Location: Vieques Humane Society.

Activity level: Energetic.

Likes: People, running, playing, swimming, and receiving affection.

Dislikes: Cats.

Training: Jimmy hasn’t had any formal training but walks reasonably well on a leash. Since he’s so eager to please, he would respond well to positive reinforcement training.

Yard requirements: Jimmy would do best in a home with a secure, fenced-in yard, as he enjoys his freedom and is clever enough to escape a short or poorly constructed fence.

Kids: While Jimmy is great with older kids, he is also very strong and requires firm handling, so living in a home with small children may not be appropriate.

Dogs and cats: Jimmy gets along well with dogs his same size, especially females. A home without small dogs or cats would be best.

Health issues: Shortly after Jimmy arrived at the shelter in 2014, he had a seizure, which the shelter’s vet attributed to epilepsy. He receives 60 mg of Phenobarbital daily and has had no further episodes.

His story: Jimmy was found as an abandoned adolescent pup on the downtown streets of Vieques Island. He was a frequent visitor to the ferry dock, local restaurants, and food kiosks, where he was well known and loved by the local community. After he was nearly hit by cars several times, however, a shelter volunteer decided to remove him from the streets.

His ideal forever home: A strong, patient, and experienced dog parent or family willing to exercise him regularly and work on his training would be the best situation for Jimmy. He would be most successful as the only dog or with a female dog his size.

Other details prospective adopters should know: Jimmy’s transportation to the mainland U.S. or Canada via airline can be easily arranged through Vieques Humane Society; adopters would just be responsible for travel fees and picking him up from the airport.
